 Forklift Masts Bismarck - Bismarck (population 61,272) is the capital city of the state of North Dakota in the USA. Bismarck is situated on the east bank of the Missouri River, across from Mandan. Bismarck serves as the county seat of Burleigh County. After Fargo, the city of Bismarck is the 2nd biggest city by population in North Dakota State. Mandan and Bismarck form the core of the Bismarck-Mandan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The metropolitan area population is just more than 100,000.
The Mandan people were the central North Dakota region's original inhabitants before settlement. The city that would later become Bismarck was founded in the year 1872 at a place on the river known as Missouri Crossing. The first name of Bismarck was Edwinton, named after Edwin Ferry Johnson, the former engineer-in-chief for the Northern Pacific Railway. As part of an effort to attract investments from Germany, the Railway changed the city's name to Bismarck in 1873. The name was intended to honor the German chancellor, Otto von Bismarck. But it was the discovery of gold that caused the city of Bismarck to boom. Gold was discovered within the nearby Black Hills during the year 1874, and the city became a freight-shipping hub at the terminus of the "Custer Route". Named capital of the Dakota Territory during 1883 and state capital of North Dakota in 1889, the city of Bismarck became a center of government. Bismarck also played an important part within the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
The Capitol building of North Dakota is a 19-story tower in Downtown Bismarck. It is also the tallest building in the state. Providing over 4,000 jobs, the government of the state is the largest employer within Bismarck. Bismarck is also a center for retail and health care, forming the economic hub for much of north-central South Dakota and south-central North Dakota. St. Alexius Medical Center and Medcenter One Health Systems are Bismarck's biggest health care providers, employing more than 4,000 residents. Other significant businesses in Bismarck are Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Coventry Health Care, Midwest Motor Express and Bismarck Public Schools. The Federal Government of the United States also employs a lot in the city of Bismarck. Bismarck is the home of MDU Resource Group, a Fortune 500 company.
