 Forklift Masts Waterbury - Waterford, Connecticut is situated roughly 33 miles southwest of Hartford and 77 miles northeast of New York City. The city of Waterford sits on the Naugatuck River right in the center of New Haven County. The population is estimated to be 110 366, making it the 9th largest city in New England, Connecticut's 5th biggest, and the 2nd biggest in the County.
The first settlement occurred in the year 1674 in a region referred to as Town Plot. This particular region was soon vacated just after King Philip's War during 1675. The plot was later returned in the year 1677, within a region that was just a little west of the first settlement. Both of these historic locations are marked. Initially the city of Waterbury was called "Mattatock" after "Matetacoke", an Algonquin word, which means the "place without trees". When the city was admitted to the colony of Connecticut on the 15th of May, the year 1686, it was called the city of Waterbury. It was called the city of Waterbury after all of the streams that flow into the Naugatuck River. At that time, the city of Waterbury included some parts which would eventually become their own towns, such as Plymouth, Watertown, Prospect, Naugatuck, Wolcott, Middlebury and Thomaston.
The city of Waterbury earned its nickname "Brass City" because of its leading role in the manufacturing of brassware. The city of Waterbury is well-known for its gorgeous watches and clocks. The motto of Waterbury, "Quid Aere Perennius" is written in marble above the city hall entrance. "Quid Aere Perennius" when translated means "What Is More Lasting Than Brass?" Waterbury is renowned for its vibrant art, advanced technology and beautiful historic architecture.
Manufacturing remains the pulse of Waterbury economy. The city of Waterbury has on the other hand started to diversify its economy with the emergence of warehouse and distribution, chemical research, banking and retail sectors. The headquarters of Les-Care Kitchens is located in Waterbury, as is the headquarters of Webster Financial Corp, American Bank of Connecticut, Hubbard-Hall, QSend Technologies, and an assortment of other firms.
In Waterbury, the biggest employment sectors, consist of transportation, health services and education, utilities and trade, manufacturing, government, business and professional services, hospitality and leisure, and finance.
There are several places in Waterbury which cater to the artistic and cultural parts of the city. Amongst the attractions which can be found within the city are the Palace Theater, which is a historic landmark dating back to the 1920's. Amongst the premiere attractions in the city is the Palace Theatre. This historic landmark was constructed during 1920 and has just gone through a $30 million renovation. Another attraction is the Mattatuck Museum. A wide assortment of tours are offered, each highlighting different elements of architecture, the art, and history of the Greater Waterbury Region. The Timexpo Museum offers an extremely detailed history of the clock and watch industry in the city. A wonderful, scenic train ride through the Mattatuck State Forest is offered by the Railroad Museum of New England.
There are several attractions situated in the nearby cities of Oakville Middlebury, Thomaston, Naugatuck and Lake Quassapaug, like for instance The Thomaston Opera House, the Railroad Museum of New England, Black Rock State Park, Branchbrook Campground, Clockwork Repertory Theater, Golden Age of Trucking Museum, the Quassy Amusement Park, Hetzel Refuge and Larkin Birdle Trail.
