According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis statistics, the North Carolina gross state product was over four hundred billion dollars during 2008. The ranked the state as the 9th best GDP in the United States. The 2007 personal income per capita was $33,735, placing it 36th in the country.
The state of North Carolina offers agricultural outputs consisting of milk, tobacco, poultry and eggs, soybeans, sweet potatoes, cattle, hogs and nursery stock. Recently, the state has been affected by industrial growth and off-shoring within nations such as China. About 1 in 5 manufacturing jobs has been lost to competition from abroad.
The economic growth of North Carolina's urban and rural areas has been distinctly different. A lot of the state's small towns have suffered from loss of jobs and population, whereas large cities like for instance Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro have gone through rapid population and economic growth during the last 30 years. Many of the state's small towns historically developed around furniture and textile factories.
