 Forklift Masts Hartford - The capital city of the state of Connecticut is Hartford. Until the state disbanded county government in 1960, Hartford formed the seat of Hartford County. Based on the Census of the year 2010, the city's population was 124,775, making it the 7th biggest city within New England. It is the second most densely inhabited city located on the Connecticut River, that is the biggest river in New England. Hartford ranks the 3rd largest city within Connecticut, coming in after the coastal cities of Bridgeport and New Haven. With a population of about 1,212,400, Greater Hartford was the largest metropolitan area within the state of Connecticut, based on the census of the year 2010.
During the year 1614, Adriaen Block, a Dutch explorer visited the area. Shortly after, fur traders from the New Netherland colony set up trade at Good Hope, called at the time as Fort Goede Hoop. This fort was situated at the convergence of the Connecticut and Park Rivers. It was established during the year 1623 but the fur traders ended up leaving their post by the year 1654. Nowadays, the region close to the site is still known as Dutch Point.
The original English settlers started to come to the area in the year 1635. The settlement was first referred to as Newtown until 1637, when it was renamed Hartford. This name was chosen to honor the home of Samuel Stone, among the first settlers, who came from Hertford, an English township.
Hartford has been dubbed the "Insurance capital of the world" and is home to many key insurance company's headquarters. Many of these insurance companies have moved or relocated parts of the operations to nearby cities and various locations. One more main part of the local economy consists of the Finance sector. Because of the Supreme Court, the legislature and the state capital building being situated within Hartford, the government provides one more important economic factor.
The city is also home to lots of high-tech manufacturing firms and Fortune 500 multi-national organizations. Through these Hartford based organizations, they manufacture products like precision instruments, electrical equipment, biomedical devices and computers. The city of Hartford is a famous telecommunications and data processing center. In addition, aerospace technology and information technology are other notable elements in the economy.
The major employment sectors within Hartford include: Financial, Transportation and Utilities, Business and Professional Services, Health Services and Education, Manufacturing, Government and Leisure and Hospitality.
The city has numerous active parks tended to by the recreation department in addition to the surrounding state parks and beautiful forests. There are numerous ski areas nearby, which provide numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation. The nearby countryside has much to provide in terms of history, shoreline and lots of rivers. These environment offer ample opportunities for people who like to enjoy nature. There is an organization in Hartford known as Riverfront Recapture. They work to be able to increase public access to the Connecticut River and have added a network of public recreational facilities along with a vast network of parks.
