The city was nicknamed in the year 1882 the "Magic City" because of its growth as a founding railroad. The city was named for a former president of the Northern Pacific Railroad Frederick H. Billings. The city is the trade and distribution center for the majority of the state of Montana, Northern Wyoming and western parts of South and North Dakota. As among the biggest trade areas in the entire United States, Billings has likewise become the retail destination for much of the same region. There are more hotel accommodations in the city of Billings than in whatever area within a 5-state area. This makes it an ideal city to host sporting events, concerts and various conventions.

Billings future was established as a pretty significant trade and distribution hub since the city was mainly founded as key railway hub. Moreover, because there is no sales tax within Montana, Billings is a retail destination for a lot of North Dakota, Wyoming, South Dakota, together with most of Montana. Billings is also an energy center because it sits amongst vast natural gas and oil fields in addition to being located on the largest coal reserves within the United States.
