The capital city of Utah State, Salt Lake City or SLC serves a population of just over 185,000, making it the most densely inhabited city in the state of Utah. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, population approximately 1,124,200. The larger urban area wherein Salt Lake is situated is called the Wasatch Front, that has a population of over 2 million. Reno, in Nevada State and the Wasatch Front, are the two largest urban regions in the Great Basin.
Brigham Young, Mormon leader together with his followers founded the community during 1847. The Mormon settlers changed a dry valley with irrigation and cultivation. Until 1868 the city was called "Great Salt Lake City" after nearby Great Salt Lake. The city of Salt Lake is home to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or likewise known as LDS Church) world head office. Mormons comprise about half the population of the city.
Known as the Crossroads of the West, Salt Lake City had an economy which was boosted by immigration of LDS Church members. They grew more rapidly thanks to foreigners, a railroad boom and mining booms. During the year 1913, the city became the point of intersection of the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway and the transcontinental railroad. Now, the I-80 and I-15, two main cross-country freeways, intersect within Salt Lake.
Salt Lake City is known for its skiing facilities. The city of Salt Lake played host to the 2002 Winter Olympics. The outdoor recreation tourist business is essential to the Salt Lake City economy. People looking for outdoor adventure come to visit the Wasatch Mountains nearby.
Salt Lake City has a thriving arts and culture sector. Salt Lake City has a plethora of museums: The Children's Museum of Utah, The Utah Museum of Fine Arts, The Red Butte garden and Arboretum, The Utah Museum of natural History and The Clark Planetarium.
A lot of the local residents are employed by either the state, local and federal. The other key city industries consist of business and professional services, trade, transportation and utilities. Industrial banking is a main economic sector. Most of the industrial banks in the nation are headquartered in the region of Salt Lake. Additionally, the city has lots of regional distribution centers, call centers and convention centers.
Both the University of Utah and Intermountain Healthcare are key employers within Salt Lake City. Other major businesses that have head office within the city consist of Alpha Graphics, Sinclair Oil Corporation, Zions Bancorporation and Smith's Food and Drug.
