 Forklift Masts Killeen - Killeen is situated within Bell County and now has a population of roughly 140,021. Over the last decade the city of Killeen has undergone significant growth. During 2000, the population was 86,911. By the year 2009, it was 119,510 and during the year 2010 the population had reached 127,921. Killeen is among the principle cities of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The area which the city of Killeen currently occupies was initially a small farming community known as Palo Alto, that had existed ever since the year 1872. During the year 1881, the Gulf, Santa Fe and Colorado Railway purchased 360 acres of land, comprising the land where Palo Alto was situated. They created a 70-block town on the land. The town was named after Frank P. Killeen, the assistant General Manager of Railroad. Killeen prospered, and by the next year a salon, railroad depot, a school and several stores had been developed. Some people from nearby communities relocated to the city and by the year 1884 the population had risen to roughly 350 individuals. During this time, the city of Killeen had five general stores, two gristmills, two saloons, two cotton gins, a lumberyard, a blacksmith shop, and a hotel.
Fort Hood is situated just near Killeen City. As a result, the economy in Killeen is mainly dependent on the soldiers stationed at the Fort. Fort Hood is the area's largest source of employment. Various areas of work within Killeen City are educational services, government, healthcare, construction, accommodation and food services, and insurance and finance. Around 25 percent of the labor force works in sales and occupations. Approximately 24% is employed in service work, and roughly 21% is involved in management, professional and related occupations.
Within the city of Killeen, a lot of the occupations offered in the city do require a university or college degree. The most common of these jobs consist of teachers, registered nurses, training and development specialists, management analysts, network and computer systems administrators, educational, school and vocational counselors, computer systems analysts, and computer programmers. Approximately 16% of the population holds a bachelors degree. In 2009, the average income was $32,000 and the cost of living index is 79.9.
