 Forklift Masts Arlington County - Arlington County, Virginia is located on the south bank of the Potomac River within the northern part of the state of Virginia. The County is directly across the river from Washington, D.C.
More than 200 years ago, the Commonwealth of Virginia donated a part of land to the United States government. This land became part of the new federal capital district. During the year 1801, the US Congress named the region Alexandria County and organized it as a subdivision of the District of Columbia. Forty-five years later, unresolved Congressional representation controversies and the issue of slavery forced Congress to return the land to the Commonwealth of Virginia. The name of the county was eventually changed to Arlington.
Situated southeast of Arlington County is Alexandria, that is a city which borders Fairfax County and the City of Falls Church towards the southwest. Arlington County by total land area, is the smallest self-governing county within the nation. There are no incorporated towns in its area of 67 square kilometers. The United States Census Bureau includes Arlington County for statistical purposes as a municipality in the Washington Metropolitan Area.
The county of Arlington has amongst the nation's highest overall incomes. Due to its nearness to Washington, D.C. across the river; the county of Arlington is the headquarters of numerous federal government agencies and departments. The department of defense, the Pentagon, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are all situated in Arlington, along with a variety of service industries, federal agencies and government contractors. The majority of office space within the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor is occupied by government contractors and agencies.
The head office of other main federal agencies in Arlington, include the Foreign Service Institute, National Science Foundation, Transportation Security Administration, Office of naval Research, the United States Trade and Development Agency, United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the United States Marshals Service.
There are many visitors that come to Arlington to go to national memorials. The Arlington National Cemetery, Pentagon Memorial, the Marine Corps War Memorial and the United States Air Force Memorial are all located here.
The County of Arlington has a very low unemployment rate. In the year 2009, the percentage of jobless residents was just 4.2. There are more than 200,000 jobs in the county. Over one quarter of these jobs are provided by federal, state or local government. Technical and professional occupations account for 19 percent, and food, accommodation and other services account for roughly 30 percent of jobs.
