The Rio Grande River flows through Albuquerque from north to south and the Sandia Mountains exist along the eastern region of the city.

The city of Albuquerque was founded in the year 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost and was referred to as Ranchos de Albuquerque. During that first year, there were 18 families residing within the region. There are lots of the historical Spanish cultural custom in present day Albuquerque.

The region initially served as a farming community along the Camino Real. Eventually, the town became more of a military outpost. The township was first built in the conventional pattern of a Spanish village: government buildings, a church and houses all surrounded a central plaza.

Currently, Albuquerque is situated at the center of the New Mexico Technology Corridor. This is a group of high-tech private companies and government institutions that run along the Rio Grande. There are various huge employers which contribute to the population with their numerous workers such as Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia National Laboratories.

Numerous highly skilled personnel are brought into this rather remote region by the attendant contracting businesses. Like for example, in suburban Rio Rancho, Intel operates a big semi-conductor factory, also known as a "fab," and its attendant huge capital investment is found within neighboring Sandoval County. Steve Baer, a solar energy guru and an architectural design innovator of Zomeworks, located his business within the region during the late 1960s. The Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Sandia Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory cooperate here in a venture which began with the Manhattan Project.

Tempur-Pedic opened up an 800,000 square foot mattress factory in the month of January 2007. This factory is located within northwest Albuquerque. During the year 2008, Schott Solar Inc. announced they would open up a 200,000 square foot facility which specializes in manufacturing receivers for CSPs or concentrated solar thermal power plants, along with 64MW of photovoltaic or also referred to as PV modules.

The University of New Mexico calls Albuquerque home. This is the largest public flagship university within the whole state. UNM has a School of Medicine which placed in the top 50 primary care oriented medical schools within the USA. The University of St. Francis College of Nursing, Trinity Southwest University and the National American University as well as Allied Health Department of Physician Assistant Studies are all located here as well.
