There are three major school districts in the city of El Paso; The Socorro Independent School District, The El Paso Independent School District and the Ysleta Independent School District. In general, the city contains 101 public elementary schools, thirty three middle/junior high schools, 22 high schools, 8 specialty schools, 3 adult learning centers, and two alternative schools. There is likewise an an academy of science and technology, an international language school, an early childhood center, and an entrepreneur center. There are 50 private schools and over 25 parochial schools in the city. Amongst the private schools in this region are renowned for their academic excellence and have been known as the best in the country. A couple of schools that have received the prestigious Blue Ribbon award are St. Clement's Episcopal Parish School and Loretto Academy. There are a couple of other private schools within the city which provide specialized academic, technical or mechanical education.
Within the regions of El Paso and Jaurez, there are two major educational centers. These are known for their academic diversity to help ensure that the students become more well-rounded people. The New Mexico State University, the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Phoenix and the El Paso Community College are the most prominent institutions in the region. In addition to these schools, there are several other excellent choices like for instance Howard Payne University, the University of Phoenix, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso and Webster University.
The economy with the city is mostly based off of worldwide trade due to its proximity to the border of Mexico. It is among the largest sources of employment within the area. Roughly half of the top 20 employers are government-related, like the United States Department of Justice. Another important industry for El Paso's economy is manufacturing. The apparel and textile trade that El Paso City used to be famous for is presently experiencing a downward spiral, though production of computers, electronics and plastic and rubber products continue to increase.
