The city of Modesto is situated within the northern part of the state, 148 km east of San Francisco. Fertile agricultural land surrounds this modest-sized city. Modesto was established during 1870. It was a train stop on the route between Sacramento and Los Angeles. Folklore says that the city was named Modesto after California financier William C. Ralston refused to have the town named after him, and a Spanish-speaking railroad worker declared that Ralston was really modest - "Muy modesto" in Spanish.

The Gallo Glass Company is a significant local employer, providing work in its large bottle manufacturing operation. Modesto people are also employed at steel plants and food canneries. Food processing facilities, including the Foster farms poultry plant and Blue Diamond Growers almond factory, are major employers. At least 20 percent of the city's labor force commutes to nearby counties for jobs.

Aside from agriculture related industries, major sectors are professional, management and related occupations, education, healthcare, food and accommodation service, social assistance and light manufacturing.

Modesto has a strong arts and culture sector. Among local arts organizations is the Gallo Center for the Arts, Central West Ballet, The Modesto Symphony, The State Theatre and The Townsend Opera Players. Local attractions include The Great Valley Museum of Natural History, The McHenry Mansion and The Castle Air Museum.

The mild weather of Northern California makes Modesto ideal for year-round outdoor recreation. Watersports like for example boating, houseboating and river rafting are popular here. The region has superb facilities for golfing and camping. Indoor recreational activities are available without charge at Beyer High School's huge public skate park. Yosemite National Park is less than one hour away.
