 Forklift Masts Omaha - The city of Omaha, Nebraska is located in the midwest section of the state. The city supports more than 400,000 people and serves as the county seat for Douglas County. The city is located along the Missouri River, north of the mouth of the Platte River, which is approximately 30 km away. Omaha is the largest city within the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area (population 865,350) and the largest within the state. There are over 1.2 million people in a 80-km radius of the city's center, forming the Greater Omaha area, the 60th-largest metropolitan area in the United States.
Originally, Omaha was settled by the Omaha Indians. Established during 1854, Omaha was founded during the settling of America since it served as an important supply stop for families heading west. With the arrival of the Union Pacific transcontinental railroad during the year 1869, the city of Omaha became a transportation center for the area, which developed as a major center for agricultural products like for instance grains and livestock.
Omaha now has a diversified economic base. Although retaining its core agricultural sector, the city has attracted such diverse businesses as insurance, banking, and telecommunications including high technology. Omaha is the home of many company headquarters, like Ameritrade, ConAgra Foods, Mutual of Omaha, Berkshire Hathaway, Union Pacific Railroad, West Teleservices and Sitel Corporation. The United States military is one more major employer. Offutt Air Force Base is home of the US Strategic Command.
The city features many attractions associated to the arts, like the city's very own symphony, opera and theaters. Omaha's Joslyn Art Museum has a huge collection of western and Native American art. The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts supports the creativeness of artists through artist residencies. There are some museums in the city of Omaha, like for instance El Museo Latino, Durham Western Heritage Museum and Great Plains Black History Museum.
Omaha maintains well developed trail systems all over the city. Residents and visitors could traverse 130 km of paved trails. The most popular section for jogging, walking, rollerblading and cycling is the Keystone Trail/Bellevue Loop Trail. To experience nature outside of the city, the neighboring Desoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge has bald eagles, geese and ducks. Water sports and fishing facilities are available on lake Manawa, Carter Lake and the Missouri River.
The attractions in the city of Omaha have taken advantage of the city's early history, when the famous British writer Rudyard Kipling visited here. The city of Omaha was the site of the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show during the year 1883, when it drew some 8,000 spectators. Omaha has many tourist attractions today. Downtown Omaha is the location of The Old Market, a key attraction and a successful retail center. Tourists could attend the College World Series and visit the Henry Doorly Zoo.
