Hydraulic Pumps, Valves and Cylinders

Liquid propane cylinders are used on a lot of lift trucks. A few facilities are capable of refuelling their own propane cylinders, however, the majority will have their cylinders refilled in a different place and delivered to their workplace instead. Whenever a forklift runs out of fuel, the cylinders are changed. Some training and cautions is required whenever handling propane as it is a really flammable material.

Personal Protective Equipment, likewise known as PPE, must be worn prior to changing or filling a lift truck cylinder. As liquid propane is really cold, it can lead to burns if it comes into skin contact. All the time putting on thick leather gloves would help protect hands. Goggles or several standard eyewear together with a face shield is likewise highly recommended. Having a fire extinguished close at hand is also suggested before the refuelling process begins.

Make certain that the surroundings are safe from whichever open fires or lit cigarettes. Look for the fill valve on the cylinder and remove the cap. Then you could attach the fill line to the fill valve. When the fill line is in place, carefully open the bleed valve. This would be a small round knob on the cylinder that is often brass coloured. A hissing sound may escape when the valve is open and this is normal so long as it is only air being vented and not actual propane.

Open the valve extremely gradually on the fill line, listening for any leaks. If there are no leaks, then the valve can be safely opened. The sounds of fuel entering the tank should be easy to hear. Never leave the tank unattended whenever refuelling and watch the bleeder valve through the process. A spray of white propane gas will emit from the bleeder valve once the tank is full. Turn the fill valve off completely and next close the bleeder valve. Really unhurriedly and carefully take out the fill line from the tank. Watch for whichever extra gas caught in the coupling which will be expelled when the seal is broken. It must only be a small quantity of gas and is normal. Put back the protective cap on the fill valve. Double check all valves are entirely closed. The tank is now set and full to utilize.
