The first name of the region went by the Paulus Hook, which was a name which came from Michael Paulusen. He served as among New Jersey's early governors. The city was first incorporated as the city of Jersey during 1820. At that time it was still part of the township referred to as Bergen. During 1838, it was reincorporated and during that time, the city became independent and given its existing name of Jersey City. The population grew immensely between the years 1860 and 1870, more than quadrupling. The economic strength of the region was because of the consolidation of different municipalities into Jersey City as well as the emerging factories.
During the year 1916, a major event happened when German saboteurs exploded railway cars loaded with ammunition into the Black Tom Island of the city.
