 Forklift Masts Rochester - Rochester (population 210,565) is a city within the state of New York. It serves as the county seat for Monroe County. It is the 3rd most densely inhabited city in the state of New York after New York City and the city of Buffalo. Rochester is located just south of Lake Ontario.
Rochester's Larger Metropolitan Area consists of all of Monroe County and parts of Genesee County, Ontario County, Orleans County and Wayne County. Based on the 2010 Census, the metro area has a population of about 1,054,300 residents.
The city of Rochester has a vibrant and rich culture and arts sector because the city places a priority on the arts. Providing numerous opportunities for Greater Rochester inhabitants within the city's Arts & Cultural Council. Cultural institutions include the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Strong Museum, the Rochester Museum & Science Center, the Geva Theatre Center, the AV Room and the Strasenburg Planetarium. Once recognized as The World's Image Centre, because of its role in the history of photography, the city of Rochester is home to the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. Rochester's yearly calendar comprises the Park Avenue Merchants Festival, the Rochester Jazz Festival and the Corn Hill Festival. Film festivals are held each and every year, most particularly the High Falls Film Festival.
The city is known for its colourful vernacular that has spread far beyond the city's border. Rochester locals popularized the word "pop" which translates to soda drinks. Hot dogs are known as "red hots".
Recognized as the Flour City, Rochester has been more recently dubbed "the Flower City". The city of Rochester attracts over 100,000 tourists from all around the world who come to the yearly Lilac Festival. People who love outdoor activities could hike around stunning waterfalls and canyons at Letchworth State Park, south of the city. Lots of residents have cottages in the nearby Finger Lakes Region.
Rochester is home to Fortune 1000 company Eastman Kodak, once the largest employer within the region. A number of national and regional companies are located here, including Bausch and Lomb. Rochester was the birthplace of Xerox in 1906, then called The Haloid Company. Xerox still has a presence within the city of Rochester. Western Union was founded in the Rochester region, but has since moved.
Due to the city's huge concentration of optical science research and businesses, the city of Rochester is recognized as the imaging capital of the world. The Institute of Optics is located on the campus of the University of Rochester. Rochester Institute of Technology in the nearby Henrietta also has an imaging program. At present, the University of Rochester is the biggest employer in the Rochester area.
