The city of Flint was founded during 1819, by prominent Detroit fur trader Jacob Smith. The site was a perfect site for a stopover on the overland route between Detroit and Saginaw. It grew quickly into a small sized village. The settlement became incorporated as Flint during the year 1855. The name was chosen from the river running through the area. The city of Flint established itself as a lumber center during the latter half of the 19th century. As the century drew to a close the city was able to leverage its lumbering infrastructure into a burgeoning carriage-manufacturing business. Flint soon became called "Vehicle City," as it became the globe's largest carriage-making center. Flint was in the forefront of the new automobile trade when horse-drawn carriages gave way to the advent of cars.

William C. Durant founded the General Motors Corporation during the year 1908. The motor vehicle assembly and manufacturing rapidly prospered into a big business. Flint has remained closely tied to the automobile business during the 20th century. The city has ridden the wave of the industry's times of difficulties and success which have happened.

The automobile business which was once a major part of the local economy has gone through a major decline even if it still contributes to the overall economy.
