The city of Olathe is known as the cowboy capital since it served as a stopping point along the Santa Fe Trail, the Oregon Trail and the California Trail. The name of the community derived from the Shawnee word for beautiful. Dr. John T. Barton founded the city during 1857 and it became the county seat two years later. Welcoming the travelers was the city's main purpose and primary source of income. Local stores and businesses sprung up to cater to people going westward. A well-known resupply point for wagons was the Mahaffie House, that Olathe now operates as a registered historical location staffed by people in period costumes. To add to the authenticity are farm animals and stagecoach rides. Re-enactments of the Wild West Days and the Civil War take place there.

The Adam Legler Barn Museum consists of a restored stone barn dating back to the year 1864. More local history can be discovered at the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site. Swope Park is amongst the largest urban parks within the U.S. where people could tour around the Heart of America Golf Course.

With such businesses like for example Honeywell, Husqvarna, ALDI, Grundfos and Garmin, Olathe has developed a good commercial and industrial base. Another major source of employment is the Air Route Traffic Control Center (designated ZKC) administered by the US Department of Transportation.
