It is surrounded by various Texas communities; Farmer's branch to the south, Coppell to the west and Addison to the east. Due to its central location, it is part of three Texas counties: Collin, Denton and Dallas. The city of Carrollton is technically a suburb of the city of Dallas and as such is considered a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name of Carrollton, is believed to have come from Carrollton, Illinois, which was the birthplace of the cities earliest settlers. Carrollton, Texas was originally settled in 1840 and was officially incorporated by the year 1913. In the beginning it was exclusively an agricultural community, but when the railway lines ran through the city of Carrollton in 1888 it became a shipping hub for grain, livestock, cotton, cottonseed, and gravel. Carrollton City grew significantly at the end of WWII World War II and was later enhanced by the surplus of people arriving from North Dallas.

Because of it's central location and business cost advantages, the city of Carrollton is able to draw a wide variety of different businesses. More than five thousand businesses are situated within the city with most of them being involved with manufacturing, construction and wholesale trades, insurance, real estate or finance.

The amount of developed park land is presently more than 1,230 acres, making it one of the highest park land per capita within the area. The city of Carrollton provides several amenities to its people, like for instance two recreation centers, two swimming facilities, homestead museum, a senior center, tennis center, and an amphitheater. There are some playgrounds, playing fields, hiking and biking trails, and picnic areas littered all over the city. Carrollton City boasts two of the top municipal golf courses within the state.

The city's economy is kept relatively stable with a largely diversified economic base. In the workforce, there are currently over 71,000 individuals. Carrollton City is home to various small business enterprises, that creates an entrepreneurial community.

Within the city of Carrollton; there are several world class art galleries and museums, an opera, a theater, a ballet and a symphony. Sixty acres are devoted completely to the Dallas Arts District, making it the largest downtown arts district within the US.

Furthermore, there are more than twenty five major shopping malls and thirty antique districts situated in Carrollton City. There are also some malls nearby, including Stonebriar Mall, the Dallas Galleria, and The Shops at Willow Bend. Moreover, the 1.9 million square foot Grapevine Mills Outlet mall is situated close by.
